The Fund’s Private Equity investments are managed by the staff of the Division of Pension Investment and Cash Management. The Fund's Private Equity portfolio is designed to provide returns that exceed those of public equities.
Investments in this area are private placements that include leveraged buyouts, venture capital, special situations, and similar investments in the form of participation in limited partnerships and co-investments.
Private Equity also invests in fund-of-funds, which are investments in a portfolio of private-equity funds. The fund-of-funds strategy has two primary objectives - to enhance overall diversification of the Private Equity portfolio and to supplement the portfolio with smaller funds.
As of March 31, 2008, the CRF had commitments of approximately $27.4 billion ($19.6 billion contributed) to 218 active partnerships.
In general, the Fund uses consultants and investment partners to assist in determining investment decisions. In addition, the Private Equity group invests in strategic investment mandates. For general inquiries please contact PE staff or the Fund’s partners directly.

Emerging Manager Pioneer Program
The program targets funds with assets under management below $750 million, as well as funds owned by women and minority managers. The program is actively seeking coinvestment opportunities as well.

In-State Private Equity Program
The Fund invests with private equity managers who seek to invest in New York state companies that require capital for growth. The program, created in 1999 with the support of the state Legislature, targets investment of state funds in the New York state economy. The program also targets coinvestments into companies.
