DiNapoli Names Tompkins as Communications Director
Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced today that he has named Dennis Tompkins as director of communications for the Office of the State Comptroller (OSC).
Tompkins has more than two decades experience in senior positions in and around New York State government.
“I’m committed to making OSC as transparent and open as possible,” DiNapoli said. “Taxpayers have the right to know everything about how their tax dollars are spent, and we have a responsibility to provide that information as clearly and effectively as possible. Dennis has tremendous experience both in and out of state government. And, more importantly, he shares my commitment to make sure OSC communicates that information to New Yorkers in an effective, understandable way.”
Tompkins is currently a senior public affairs counselor for Eric Mower and Associates, a marketing communications agency with offices in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany, as well as Charlotte, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia.
From 2002 through 2006, Tompkins served as media relations manager for New York State United Teachers, where he was chief spokesman and media strategist for the state’s largest union, representing 575,000 public school teachers and college faculty. Before that, he served for nine years as press secretary to New York State Comptroller H. Carl McCall and 10 years as a policy and communications aide in the New York State Assembly, where he rose to deputy press secretary for that house’s Democratic majority.
Tompkins will start work at OSC on May 3. His salary will be $158,093.
