DiNapoli, NFL and Visa Launch “Financial Football”
Game Targeted Toward Improving Teens’ Financial Literacy

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today launched “Financial Football,” an NFL-themed, interactive, money management video game, targeted toward improving financial literacy among high school students. Copies of the game are being distributed to every high school in New York State. New York Giants Wide Receiver Steve Smith and New York Jets Wide Receiver Jerricho Cotchery joined Comptroller DiNapoli and Visa Inc. at Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn to make the announcement.

“Now more than ever, it’s important for every New Yorker – young and old – to understand how money works,” said Comptroller DiNapoli. “In line with our Your Money New York Initiative, ‘Financial Football’ is a great way to get students interested in personal finances and give them a financial playbook they can use for the rest of their lives. This is a great program and a great partnership between my Office, Visa and the NFL.”

DiNapoli said “Financial Football,” which is available in CD-ROM and online at, puts students’ fiscal knowledge to the test by combining the structure and rules of the NFL with financial education questions of varying difficulty. To score points, a team needs to answer a series of money management questions correctly. Wrong answers and penalties can cost a team yardage. The team with the highest point total after four quarters wins the game.

“Boys and Girls High School is so excited to be a part of bringing ‘Financial Football’ to the forefront for the state of New York,” said Bernard Gassaway, Principal of Boys and Girls High School. “Students have excelled in many areas, but the understanding of financial education and how important it is to their futures is something that only programs like these can begin to instill. We are proud to collaborate with Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, Visa and the NFL in making this information accessible to our youth.”

This event is part of a national initiative involving Visa, the NFL and NFL Players Association.
