New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli Statement on Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Proposed Regulations on Disclosure of Political Spending"I commend Attorney General Eric Schneiderman for taking bold action today to promote transparency and accountability in the funding of elections through non-profit and 'social welfare' organizations. There is no question that the Citizens United decision has negatively affected the political process as greater and greater amounts of undisclosed donations are spent on elections at every level. These regulations will make New York a model for the nation." New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli has been an advocate for greater accountability in political spending disclosure. Over the past two years, the New York State Common Retirement Fund has filed more than two dozen resolutions with companies asking that they disclose political spending and in some cases lobbying done with corporate money. The Fund has reached agreement with 10 companies and received significant shareholder votes on several others.
