Statement From State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli on the Termination of the Statewide Wireless Contract

“After several rounds of failed testing, it has become apparent that New York is not much closer to a statewide wireless network than it was when this whole process started years ago. We cannot afford to spend $2 billion on a system that doesn’t work. This was the right decision. It’s frustrating, but New York has to go back to the drawing board. Too much money and too many lives depend on this; we have to get it right.”

Note: In August 2008, DiNapoli issued an audit of the Statewide Wireless Network (SWN). The audit found numerous operational deficiencies and other problems that led to extensive delays and continued testing failures. At that time, DiNapoli urged the New York State Office for Technology not to move forward on the network unless all the problems identified in testing are fully resolved and all contract requirements are met.
