Statement by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli
on the Brodsky/Perkins Public Authority Reform Bill
Assemblyman Brodsky and Senator Perkins’ bill is the first major step toward public authority reform we’ve seen in years. It’s long overdue.
Public authorities are a classic example of good intentions gone bad. New York’s public authorities need more oversight, more accountability and more transparency. The Brodsky/Perkins bill will give New Yorkers all of that.
We’ve had too much backdoor borrowing, too many contracts awarded with inadequate oversight, too many taxpayers dollars spent without real accountability. Public authorities have operated in the shadows; most New Yorkers don’t know what they do or who’s doing it.
Now is the time. This is the legislation. This reform bill will give New Yorkers the accountability they need and deserve. It should be signed into law.
