$194 Million Paid in Unclaimed Funds to New Yorkers in 2008 Represents $25M More Than 2007
Check to See if You are Owed Unclaimed Funds at Events in June
The State Comptroller’s office paid out $194 million in unclaimed funds in fiscal year 2008, a $25 million increase, or about 15%, over last year, State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced today.
“There is $9 billion in unclaimed funds in more than 23 million accounts from all across New York State,” DiNapoli said. “I’ve made it a priority to increase awareness about the state’s unclaimed funds. Thousands of New Yorkers heard that message and got their money back. We returned more money than ever last year, but it’s still not enough. This money belongs to New Yorkers, and we’ll keep trying to return it to them.”
Since coming to office, DiNapoli stepped up efforts to raise awareness about unclaimed funds by publicizing events statewide including at the New York State Fair, increasing the numbers of events, discussing unclaimed funds with newspaper editorial boards and personally giving checks to local governments.
Representatives from DiNapoli’s office will be on site at the events listed below in June to help New Yorkers find out if they are owed money. New Yorkers and others may also check for unclaimed funds at www.osc.state.ny.us or by calling toll free at 1-800-221-9311.
