DiNapoli Statement on Property Tax Commission Report
County Executive Suozzi and Commission members have taken on a difficult assignment. This is an important, contentious and highly complex issue. New Yorkers face a heavy tax burden that hits seniors and working families particularly hard.
Families cannot continue to pay up to half of their income on housing costs — including property taxes — when the price for food, gasoline and other home necessities are going through the roof.
Now that the report has been issued, New Yorkers will need to scrutinize the impact tax caps could have on less-wealthy school districts and on student performance. Given our current financial condition, I’m concerned about the State’s ability to keep up its end of the bargain and continue to increase education funding.
