State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli
Statement on LIPA Legislation
“As Comptroller and as a Long Islander, I’ve always believed that LIPA ratepayers deserve the same protections as other New York utility customers. The bill passed by the Assembly last week and by the Senate today is an important step toward reaching that goal. Auditors from my office are conducting a baseline audit of LIPA that will enable us to identify areas that warrant further scrutiny. Through the combined efforts of my office and the legislature, we are eliminating the gap in protections between Long Island ratepayers and those of other New Yorkers.”
In April, Comptroller DiNapoli announced the initiation of an audit of the LIPA that will establish a baseline performance level for the authority. The audit will review a wide range of LIPA’s policies, procedures, fiscal controls, and other financial and management practices. Auditors are also looking at National Grid’s compliance with the customer service provisions agreed to with LIPA in August 2007. Recommendations will be made to correct any deficiencies and follow-up audits will be conducted to determine whether the recommendations were implemented.
The audit started in early May.
