State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli Statement on Senate Chaos

The chaos in the Senate is creating a billion dollar risk to vital state programs and could impact on the state’s financial plan. And that same chaos threatens the fiscal stability of local governments, large and small, all across the state.

There are a number of bills that must be acted upon by June 30. More than 30 counties are facing the loss of up to 25 percent of their sales tax revenues. The cities of Yonkers and Olean and the town of Deerpark need bills passed to maintain fiscal balance. Without Senate action, local governments will be looking at a potential $750 million in revenue losses. And that doesn’t include New York City, which stands to lose a billion dollars in revenue and lost savings – dollars that are necessary for the city to maintain its balanced budget.

If the Senate continues on this path, taxpayers will be paying a very high price for very bad behavior.

There are six days left to come up with a resolution. Legislation needs to be passed. New Yorkers are watching and waiting. It’s time for responsible leadership.
