DiNapoli: New Page On Your Money New York Website
Provides Resources for the LGBT Community
New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced a new section of his Your Money New York Web site that provides lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) New Yorkers with essential resources to help achieve financial stability. The new section offers access to reliable information on legal rights, on domestic partnerships and programs of interest to the LGBT community, and on other resources that can support individuals through tough economic situations.
“Equality is elusive,” DiNapoli said. “There’s still work to do, and there are still protections and help needed to ensure everyone is treated equally. This new section of Your Money New York is another resource that can help LGBT New Yorkers reach economic security and protect their finances.
“In 2007, I ordered the New York State and Local Retirement System to recognize same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions. And I continue to support and advocate for fairness and equality for all New Yorkers.”
Your Money New York (www.yourmoneynewyork.com) is a Web site introduced by DiNapoli last year to give New Yorkers easy access to information and useful resources on money-related matters.
“The Latino Commission on AIDS applauds the leadership of NY State comptroller DiNapoli for his commitment and support to the Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender communities of New York State. This website will be an important resource for our communities statewide” stated Guillermo Chacon, President of the Latino Commission on AIDS.
In addition to the challenges everyone faces in managing money wisely, LGBT individuals may encounter distinctive difficulties related to their sexual orientation or gender identity. For instance, many financial issues for lesbian and gay people arise from the fact that same-sex couples cannot marry in New York State and do not enjoy the rights and protections automatically afforded to married heterosexual couples. Consequently, members of same-sex couples may not have the same rights as married spouses in areas such as common property, inheritance, and health insurance coverage, and may need to address these issues in a legal document.
The new LGBT section of Your Money New York also includes access to information from federal, State and local government resources, including:
- General Resources
- Legal Rights and Protection
- Marriage and Domestic Partnership
- Research and Advocacy
