DiNapoli's Office Completes Municipal Audit

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced his office completed the audit of County of Monroe – Jail Overtime.

“My office’s audits of local governments improve their financial management practices,” DiNapoli said. “These audits are tools for local officials to make sure proper policies and procedures are in place to protect taxpayer dollars and provide the best possible service these taxpayer dollars can deliver.”

Auditors determined that the county would potentially save about $2.0 million in payroll costs over a five-year period if an additional 26 deputy jailors were hired. These additional positions could be filled by hiring and training 26 new deputy jailors, by hiring qualified retired deputy jailors on a part-time basis, or a combination of both methods. The county could save more money by hiring a combination of new deputy jailors and part-time retired deputies, rather than hiring only new deputy jailors, due to lower employee benefit and training costs. For example, if the county chooses to hire and train 21 new deputy jailors and supplement the difference by hiring 10 qualified retired deputy jailors on a part-time basis, the potential five-year savings could range from about $2.9 to $3.1 million.
