Statement From State Comptroller DiNapoli
on Governor Paterson’s Deficit Reduction Plan
“The numbers don’t lie; we are in very difficult fiscal times. Last April, I warned that the state budget spent at a rate that cannot be sustained. Now, like the citizens we serve, we have to find ways to make ends meet.
“Governor Paterson has shown strong leadership by putting forth a plan to address New York State’s budget shortfalls. The economy will probably get worse before it gets better. The sooner we take action to control spending and address the out year budget gaps, the better New York will be in the long run.
“We have to avoid temptation. Irresponsible budget gimmicks may look like the easy way out, but those are the kind of wrong choices that helped make a bad situation even worse for New York in the long run. We’re in a crisis, but this crisis is also an opportunity to fix things. First, we need to control spending and make sure we only spend what we have. Every dime counts, and New York is going to have to manage its dimes very carefully over the next few years.”
