Statement From State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli on
Governor Paterson's Proposed Budget Cuts
Today, Governor Paterson proposed a series of budget cuts in an effort to balance the state’s books. As I said yesterday, the state could face a deficit of more than $4 billion by the end of the fiscal year if no action is taken. This budget has simply not held together.
Four billion dollars is no small change. Waiting for the economy to recover is not the answer. Though there are some early signs of an economic recovery, the state must still align recurring revenues with recurring spending. The Legislature needs to work with the Governor to get the state’s perilous finances back on track and protect the interests of taxpayers.
