DiNapoli's Office Completes Audit of
Eldred Central School District
New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced his office completed the audit: Eldred Central School District – Virtual Desktops: Cost Savings and Energy Conservation.
“My office’s audits of local governments improve their financial management practices,” DiNapoli said. “These audits are tools for local officials to make sure proper policies and procedures are in place to protect taxpayer dollars. Eldred Central School District should be commended for its efforts to identify cost-savings opportunities. By incorporating virtual desktop technology in its computer labs, the district could save thousands. During these difficult times, this is the kind of good news the district and its taxpayers need.”
DiNapoli’s auditors found that, as part of the district’s planning to replace 30 new computers in one of the its computer labs in the summer of 2010, district officials researched the possibility of converting to virtual desktops rather than purchasing traditional computers. Officials decided to replace the first lab with 30 virtual desktops because of the potential cost savings and potential savings in service and maintenance time.
DiNapoli’s auditors noted that officials decided that if the district achieves cost and time savings with the first lab, then it will replace one additional lab per year with the virtual desktop technology until three labs have been equipped with 30 virtual desktops each.
Auditors from DiNapoli’s auditors also found that the district could achieve $68,473 in cost savings over a three-year period by replacing their traditional computers with virtual desktops.
