Local Government Services

The Division of Local Government Services and Economic Development is looking for people to help provide an extensive range of services to help local governments operate more efficiently and effectively. These services include performance audits, which provide information on areas where local governments may improve services or reduce costs, technical assistance, training local officials and special consultative services, particularly to local governments showing signs of fiscal stress.

The Division of Local Government Services and Economic Development provides oversight and support for more than 3,300 local governments including counties, cities, towns, villages, school districts and other jurisdictions. Division staff audit and examine the accounts and fiscal records of local governments; prescribe systems of budgeting, accounting and reporting; and have various other approval and monitoring functions. The Division staff work in partnership with local governments to identify effective and strategic government reform and economic development initiatives that benefit communities and regions.

The Division carries out its responsibilities in a proactive manner, operating under the principles of partnership with local governments, its direct customers.

Division staff have the opportunity to work out of eight offices located in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, Glens Falls, Albany, Hauppauge and Newburgh or the Central office at 110 State Street in Albany. Our work is diversified and interesting and we provide ongoing training to keep staff skills honed.
