Retiring With Less Than 25 Years of Service Credit

Tiers 3 and 5
  • If you retire at age 62 or older with more than 20, but less than 25 years of service credit, the benefit is 1/50th (2 percent) of your FAS for each year of service.
  • If you retire at age 62 or older with less than 20 years of service credit, the benefit will equal 1/60th (1.66 percent) of your FAS for each year of service.
  • If you choose early retirement between the ages of 55 and 62 with less than 25 years of creditable service, your benefit will be reduced for early retirement.

It is important to know that once you retire with a reduced benefit, the reduction is permanent — it does not end when you turn 62.

Tier 6
  • If you retire at age 63 or older with more than 20, but less than 25 years of service credit, the benefit is 1/50th (2 percent) of your FAS for each year of service.
  • If you retire at age 63 or older with less than 20 years of service credit, the benefit will equal 1/60th (1.66 percent) of your FAS for each year of service.
  • If you choose early retirement between the ages of 55 and 63 with less than 25 years of creditable service, your benefit will be reduced for early retirement.

It is important to know that once you retire with a reduced benefit, the reduction is permanent — it does not end when you turn 63.
