Help Improve State Government

Future Forward Internship Academy participants experience the challenges and rewards of working in State service by combining academic studies with hands-on working opportunities.

Choose From Five Rewarding Career Tracks

This paid academic and experiential program runs for 12 weeks (37.5 hours/week), offering up to 13 semester credit hours. All majors will be considered.

Track I - Auditing

Locations: New York City and Albany

Summer Session 12 Weeks:

  • 13 Upper Level Credits
  • 37.5 Hours/Week (15 hours in classroom training/experiential learning, 22.5 hours on Agency payroll) 

Academic Component

The Auditing track provides an academic focus on accounting coursework, which lends itself to those who may be pursuing or interested in pursuing a degree within the accounting field. In addition, this track allows students to gain professional knowledge and experience performing various tasks that an auditor would perform: working with a team on the completion of an audit; drafting reports and memoranda regarding audit findings; etc. Available in New York City and Albany locations. 

Experiential Learning

Students may be assigned to work with audit teams in the Division of State Government Accountability, Bureau of State Expenditures, the Division of Investigations or Payroll, Accounting and Revenue Services.
 

Track II – Governmental Accounting & Management

Location: Albany

Summer Session 12 Weeks: 

  • 13 Upper Level Credits
  • 37.5 Hours/Week (15 hours in class/experiential learning, 22.5 hours on Agency payroll)

Academic Component

The Governmental Accounting & Management track allows students to participate in an academic program that prepares them for business leadership. This track offers those students seeking a broader overview of business management practices an opportunity to expand their knowledge base regarding basic business practices and models. In addition to the academic component, students will have the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge within the Office of the State Comptroller in a variety of capacities. Available in Albany only.

Experiential Learning

Students may be assigned to the Office of Operation’s Oil Spill Remediation Unit, the Bureau of Contracts, the Bureau of Financial Reporting or Payroll, Accounting and Revenue Services. 
 

Track III – Human Resources & Administration

Location: Albany

Summer Session 12 Weeks: 

  • 12 Upper Level Credits
  • 37.5 Hours/Week (15 hours in class/experiential learning, 22.5 hours on Agency payroll)

Academic Component

The Human Resources & Administration track offers students an opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and abilities pertaining to the various core business functions of human resources. This track offers students an overview of staffing and personnel, employee compensation and performance review, and labor relations. Students will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in the key operations of human resources through hands-on professional experience. Only available in Albany. 

Experiential Learning

Students may be assigned to the Office of Human Resources, the Division of Budget and Policy Analysis, the Labor Relations Unit, the Bureau of Finance, or the Program Management Office.
 

Track IV – Project Management

Location: Albany

Summer Session 12 Weeks: 

  • 12 Upper Level Credits
  • 37.5 Hours/Week (15 hours in class/experiential learning and 22.5 hours on the Agency payroll) 

Academic Component

The Project Management track focuses on the core components of project management from start to finish. Students, through completion of the course, will not only formulate and execute a project of their own, but they will also be responsible for the presentation of the final product. Their project will be presented to various constituents and stakeholders, and students will receive feedback from their peers on the feasibility and quality of their project. Only available in Albany.

Experiential Learning

Students may be assigned to work on projects in any division within the Agency.
 

Track V – Business Analysis

Location: Albany

Summer Session 12 Weeks:

  • 13 Upper Level Credits
  • 37.5 Hours/Week (15 hours in class/experiential learning, 22.5 hours on Agency payroll)

Academic Component

The Business Analysis track focuses on the knowledge areas of business analysis, which are a collection of logically (but not sequentially) related tasks that describe specific activities which accomplish the purpose of their associated knowledge area. Students will actively participate in exercises to gain a better understanding of how business analysis, enables change in an organization by defining needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders. This course teaches students how to articulate needs and rationale for change and design and describe solutions that can deliver value. Students will study the ways business analysis is performed on a variety of initiatives within an organization. Students will understand the role of the business analyst and how the analyst’s role aligns the designed and delivered solutions with the needs of stakeholders. Students will become familiar with understanding enterprise problems and goals, analyzing needs and solutions, devising strategies, driving change, and facilitating stakeholder collaboration. 

Experiential Learning

Students may be assigned to work in any division within the Agency.
 

Placements

All placements will be made by the Future Forward Internship Academy program. Track and experiential learning assignments will be determined based upon availability and students’ areas of study. Every attempt is made to provide interns with their stated track preferences.

Eligibility
Students must be completing their sophomore, junior or senior year of college at the time of application to be eligible. Applicants must be full-time, matriculated students at a regionally accredited college or university, or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices.

Credit Calculation

Successful participants will receive up to 12-13 upper-level college credits towards a baccalaureate degree.

35%Experiential LearningThe experiential portion of each internship consists of supervised, on-the-job training and includes a variety of assignments in the different agency units. Grading is based upon satisfactory completion of the duties assigned by the student’s immediate supervisor.
20%Attendance/Class ParticipationAttendance and active participation is required at all classes, debrief/discussion sessions and required meetings. Quizzes, LinkedIn Learning, and/or homework assignments will be administered at the discretion of the instructor.
20%Oral PresentationThe topic of this presentation will be determined by the student’s final paper. The presentation will be delivered before the entire Academy, including instructors and fellow students. The presentation will be evaluated to determine whether the student adopted the nine principles of public speaking as defined in the public speaking course.
25%Final PaperThe final paper will consist of 8 – 10 typewritten, double-spaced pages. The topic of the paper shall be based upon the experiential learning component of the Academy and must be approved by your Supervisor.
