New York State Comptroller DiNapoli Statement on EPA Proposal to Roll Back Emission Standards

October 26, 2018

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today announced that he, and eight fellow comptrollers and state treasurers, sent a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency opposing the agency's proposal to undo federal emissions standards for cars and light trucks.

"The world's leading climate scientists have recently shown that we are approaching a point of no return when it comes to global warming in the next few decades. We cannot bury our heads in the sand and ignore the changing world around us. Rolling back smart emissions standards will injure Americans' health and safety. Willfully sending more carbon into the atmosphere is economically backwards, hurting drivers' wallets and jeopardizing the competitiveness of the U.S. auto industry when global manufacturers are reducing auto emissions. The Trump Administration must withdraw this badly conceived proposal and uphold the current standards that will reduce emissions and promote fuel efficiency."
