Establishing the Standard Work Day

The days worked you report each month have a huge impact on a member’s benefits. We use days worked to determine service credit — the basis for benefit eligibility and an important factor in the calculation of retirement, death and disability benefits. So, accurately reporting days worked for your employees helps ensure the benefits they receive are accurate.

The first step in determining days worked is establishing the standard work day — the number of hours per day considered full-time for a position. For Tier 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 members, the minimum number of hours in a standard work day is 6, while the maximum is 8.

A standard work day can be established by:

Each employee title (e.g., clerks, bus drivers, etc.) must have a standard work day, even if you do not currently have any employees in that title.

You may establish several standard work days for different positions. For example, all laborers may have an eight hour standard work day and all clerical workers seven and a half hours. You may also establish several standard work days for the same title, depending on the job duties.
